How to Play Super Mario Maker

Many of you have seen the trailer for Super Mario Maker by now. If not, go watch it here. You can also play the Back to the Future Level I made while you’re at it! The video showing off all of Mario Maker’s features really shows how much work went into this title. In-depth level creation tools never before possible, sprite editing tools that will make anyone a pixel artist, and a level sharing system that has the potential to be the best part about this game.

You may notice I said people instead of just you. This is because most gamers won’t have the time nor the skill to create their own levels. Nintendo made Super Mario Maker so anyone can make a level and anyone can play them! However, designing levels is much harder than you think. If you’re like me and don’t want to design your own Mario levels often (or ever), Nintendo has given us tools to download user-created content from the internet. That means there will be an endless stream of new Mario levels daily that players like you and me can play!

What is Super Mario Maker?

Super Mario Maker is a game for the Wii U that’s all about designing and playing levels of Super Mario Bros. You can make your very own side-scrolling platforming experience with this title, and people from around the world will be able to play your levels! Nintendo has allowed anyone to upload their levels online without any limits or requirements. The game also includes a handy-dandy Course World, where you can browse and play other people’s levels! Nintendo has made this experience as intuitive and easy to use as possible. You can even search specific terms, tags, or creators to find the perfect level for you!

How to update super mario maker

First, we need to update Super Mario Maker. I don’t know about you, but my Wii U is fully updated and ready to go! Simply go to the Nintendo eShop and start up your copy of Super Mario Maker. You’ll see “Updates Available” at the top-right part of the screen; click on it! From here, you’ll see the update progress.

During this process, I have a question for you! What are your initial thoughts of Super Mario Maker? What do you think about the gameplay shown in Nintendo’s latest trailer? Share with me your thoughts down in the comments section! You never know if I reply or not! Seriously, though, let me know what you think!

How to get started in Super Mario Maker

Super Mario Maker is fairly straightforward to get started with. You can choose any one of the four game styles right off the bat: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U! Each game has its own specific assets associated with it so you’ll always know which game you’re playing when designing a level!

Now that you have your game mode selected, it’s time to design some levels! Super Mario Maker is simple and makes creating stages a breeze. In the My Course section of the course creator, you can edit your current stage or create a new one. I would start off with editing an existing stage just to get a hang of the tools and how they work!

You may think that you need to be an intricate level designer with decades of experience, but that’s just not true. The first thing we’re going to do is select the style of our level: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, or New Super Mario Bros. U! The style of the game we choose will affect what assets we can use and how our level behaves. I chose Super Mario World for my level, which means I get access to all the goodies from that specific title (and not New Super Mario Bros.!).

Conclusion

Super Mario Maker is a game everyone can enjoy. While you may not have the time or skill to create your own levels, you can wait for Nintendo to release new user-created content daily! You’ll never be without fresh Mario stages thanks to this convenient system. Super Mario Maker might just be the best Wii U game of 2015! And you might even be the best player in your neighborhood!
